Description

We are offering for sale an oil on board by the British artist R. READ, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and entitled it verso 'A Memory of the 1920's'. The painting depicts a sailing vessel being towed out of Great Yarmouth Harbour in Norfolk, by a paddle tug.

We did manage to find a photograph of the quay on the left with the tower and yardarm, but, due to copyright reasons, we are unable to show it. However, if you search images under the title Great Yarmouth Harbour, you should be able to find it under English Heritage.

R. Read was a British artist who lived at 15 North Market Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk and it was through the old label attached to the painting that we attempted to see if the scene depicted was actually Great Yarmouth harbour and it was. Unfortunately, we have been unable to find anything on this artist, possibly because most of the reference books end at 1920. However, the painting represents a snapshot of history, as the harbour has been extensively redeveloped since this picture was painted and there is only one paddle tug still left intact in this country, which is the John Amos, currently on the Medway undergoing restoration.

The painting is framed in a 2 3/8" frame and is ready to hang.

Image size: 28 5/8" x 18 5/8" - 72.7cm x 47.2cm

Frame size: 33 1/2" x 23 1/2" - 85.1cm x 59.7cm

Medium: Oils on board

Condition: Very good. The painting has been cleaned, as it was extremely dirty and yellowy brown and has been revarnished. The frame is in reasonable condition.
