Description

We are offering for sale this beautiful turn of the century hand coloured photogravure after the artist Herbert Arthur Horwitz, who signature is within the plate in the lower right hand corner. The subject is a beautiful young woman with long flowing dark hair, whose dress is in disarray and whose wrists are chained and manacled. She is pictures on a beach with tall cliffs in the background. We would estimate the date of this work to be 1900-1920.

Herbert Arthur Horwitz, although sometimes listed as Austrian, was actually born at Canonbury Road, Islington, London in 1865 of German parents. His father Max became a naturalised British citizen in 1862 and was a jewellery factor and clock importer. Herbert and his siblings, Helena, Clara, Louise, and Emanuel Henry were all born in Islington. Both Helena (1875-1921) (exh. 1889-1920) and Louise (born 1878) (exh. 1892-1914) became artists as painters of miniatures and Helena was elected a Member of the Royal Miniature Society in 1901. Emanuel Henry (born 1863) was a portrait and landscape painter, etcher, lithographer and pastel artist, as well as a photographer. He studied in Westminster, Juliens, Paris, Munich and Holland and has an extensive exhibition history. All the siblings are listed in the Dictionary of British Artists. Both the brothers are listed in the Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters and the dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.,

Herbert, 1865-1937, was a portrait painter, who studied at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won a silver medal. There is one of his paintings in the National Collection, which can be viewed at BBC - Your Paintings. He exhibited between 1892 and 1906 at the Royal Academy, Glasgow Institute, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the New Gallery. As we have found online another very Art Nouveau printor etching or photogravure by him, it may be with his brother, being a photographer, lithographer and etcher, was responsible for the photogravure of Herbert's painting. What we have been unable to find, however, is the original painting, which is probably is a private collection somewhere. He died in Hampstead in 1937.

The photogravure is glazed and has been newly framed in a 2" period style frame and gilt slip. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
