Description
We are delighted to offer for sale this large and extremely well executed watercolour by the very well listed artist FRANK WALTON, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a panoramic landscape, with, in the foreground, a flock of sheep coming round a rocky outcropin the back of which appears to be a door to a cave. The rock is split and weathered and the top is covered with flowering bushes. The quality of the detail of this painting is exceptional!FRANK WALTON was born in London on 10th July 1840. He was a landscape and coastal painter in both oil and watercolour. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1862 until 1924. He was elected a full Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1882, a full Member of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in 1883 and became its President in 1898. He was also elected an Honorary Membership of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters and was a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists.
He exhibited 101 paintings at the Royal Academy, 230 at the RI, 137 at the ROI, as well as numerous other London and provincial galleries.
Auction records achieved for works by this artist may be found at artprice.com (894 listings), artnet.com (64), findartinfo.com (50) and arcadja.com (35). The record price achieved for one of his watercolours was a view of Sark, which made £4,200 at Sothebys.
He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, British Watercolour Artists by H. Mallalieu, and the Dictionary of British Artists by Grant Waters.
He eventually moved to Holmbury St. Mary, near Dorking in Surrey, where he died on 23rd. January 1928 after a long and successful career.
The painting is mounted with wash lines and is framed in a 1 1/8" gilt frame. It will be suplied wired and ready to hang.
