We are delighted to offer for sale this unusual and compelling oil painting on canvas by the artist Charles Louis La Salle, who has signed the painting La Salle in the lower left hand corner and also signed and dated it on the canvas CHARLES LOUIS LA SALLE 1983. There is one of the artist's labels on the crossbar of the stretchers and, on the edge of the canvas, he has entitled it (Homme +) Les marches, l'Eternelle Patience, which we believe roughly translates as '(Man +) The steps, Eternal Patience'.

Charles Louis La Salle was born in 1838 in Hanoi, Vietnam. He lived in Vietnam, then French Indochina, during his childhood, but spent his adolescence in Africa. From the age of 18, he studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris and, after finishing his studies, he travelled throughout Europe seeking inspiration. He settled in Provence in 1966.

He is a painter, sculptor and engraver and he has directed operas, designed stage sets and costumes and written plays, poems and song lyrics. He has developed his individual technique over many years, but although most of his paintings employ this technique using ribbons and sometimes blocks, some of his black and white paintings which look like drawings show a different side to his talent. His subject matter leans heavily to the nude figure, but also includes horses, lions, bulls architectural features and the sea and he has executed whole series including some of these.

There are some beautiful films on facebook showing a range of his paintings, one of which includes him speaking (in French with no subtitles, sadly), and these are beautifully produced and well worth watching.

The painting has been newly framed in a contemporary 2 1/4" reeded pale grey frame, which suits it very well and will be supplied wired and ready to hang. Please note that on the main photograph, the frame is strobing but there is a close up where it appears correctly.
