Description

Imagine this cake stand loaded with mince pies, petit fours or canapes on your Christmas table!

We are pleased to offer this 166 year old, Elkington & Co. silver plated cake stand. The handle and columns are designed as vines with leaves and grapes, as are the rims. It is beautifully made, with a clever twist. Both the foliate rims lift off the glass to facilitate cleaning, and for storage, the cake stand can be dismantled by simply unscrewing the central column and removing the glass plates.

Elkington & Co. are one of the most important names in English Silver and certainly the most important in Silver Plate. George and Henry Elkington were awarded the first patents for electroplating in 1840 and they founded the electroplating industry in Birmingham which spread around the world. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace with enormous success.

The cake stand bears the early Elkington mark of E & Co., crowned and in a shield and bears the date number 5 for 1845 as shown.
