We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely orientalist watercolour by the Victorian artist, HENRY (HARRY) STANTON LYNTON, who flourished from 1886-1912, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner, entitled it 'Egypt' and dated it 1905. The painting depicts a view of the Nile in Egypt, with a ruined mosque and a group of buildings, set on a promontary. The subject was painted showing an amazing Nile sunset.

HARRY STANTON LYNTON is listed in Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents' and we will quote from this

'Painter in watercolour and occasionally oil of eastern and desert scenes who was working between 1886 and 1904. H.S. Lynton's work gained popularity with the increased interest in the Middle Eastern subjects - 'On the Nile', 'Bedouins by an Oasis' and 'Near Cairo' being typical titles. The work varies in quality but at its best could be mistaken for A.O. Lamplough his more famous contemporary. Other subjects include views on the Rhine and Venice.'

HARRY STANTON LYNTON, is a well listed Victorian artist, whose works, although he did not exhibit his work in his lifetime, command quite high prices on the market. According to Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market, a watercolour of his fetched £621 in Vienna in 2003. A pair of Nile scenes the same size as this painting achieved £1,500 at Christie's in 2009. The painting is framed in a 3 1/4" gilt and cream frame and slip which suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
