Description

We are absolutely delighted to offer this superb, English School, pastel portrait which was executed around the middle of the nineteenth century onto paper which has been laid to fine stretched canvas. The subject of the portrait was a Miss Mina Tanner, who lived in Bournemouth, Dorset around 1850. This information came from the original vendor of the pastel, who was a descendant of Miss Tanner and who put the pastel into auction. This is confirmed by an old Furniture Depository label from Bournemouth on the back of the stretcher. The pastel is unsigned, unfortunately, but has been executed by an expert hand.

Miss Tanner is pictured with her long wavy brown hair loose about her shoulders, with a blue bow on one side, which matches the blue choker around her neck, which appears to have a citrine pendant hanging from it, and her dress has a blue sash. Her dress itself is white or cream in colour and has large sleeves. She is wearing earrings. We would estimate that she was in her teens when this pastel was executed. She has a very serene expression on her face.

The pastel is framed in a 2 1/4" reeded gilt frame with an oval gilt mount and is obviously a replacement for the original. It is ready to hang.
