Description

This antique carved stone idol is a tribal piece. It certainly has some considerable age, but we are unsure of its date. The piece came to us from a sailor who was given it in his youth around fifty years ago in Tonga. He was given it for helping to nurse a sick villager and believed it to be a tribal idol put under the bed to ward off sickness. We do not know any further history to the piece, but it has also been suggested to us that it may have originally been of Nigerian origin. It is hand-carved with a face on one side.

Condition: Overall in good condition, with some wear consistent with age. There are some areas of loss and damage, including to the bottom on the front. There are some signs what may be some of restoration to the back at one side.

32cm high.
