Description

This attractive brass double bed dates from c.1860. It retains a brass headboard and footboard, and a cast iron frame. Please note that there is no mattress or base present. The headboard and footboard have a laquered finish and are supported on original metal and ceramic castors. The previous owners stated that they bought the bed from the actress Susan Hampshire, but we do not have any further provenance for this.

Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the finish as might be expected and the brassware is tarnished with some loss to the lacquer in places. The cast iron frame shows some signs of alternation - it has been welded to the headboard and footboard at some point and the orignal joints have been welded with screw fixings added to the side rails. There is a more modern screw to one side of the headboard. There is some rusting and corrosion in places, and the piece would benefit from being refinished. Some of the uprights are loose in the frame and one of the screw fittings underneath a footboard upright is misssing. Two of footboard uprights are different to the others - these may have been replaced at some point.
