Description

This lovely bank of drawers look to date from the late Victorian period. They came to us from a local Oxfordshire estate clearance, and we were told that they may have originally come from a church. They look to be filing drawers, and the top is slightly sloped like a clerk's desk (although is very high for a desk!). The chest would benefit from some tidying and re-finishing, but has a lovely original patina as is. It has a galleried back rail, a sloped top, and consists of five small drawers over three rows of four deep drawers - those on one end being larger than the others. The drawers retain their original locks, escutcheons, cup handles and plaque holders, but please note that no key is present and one escutcheon is missing. The drawers have grooves for dividers, but only a few dividers for the top small drawers are present. The chest is mahogany veneered over a solid wood carcass and is very heavy.

Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in usuable condition, but does have some heavy wear consistent with age and use. It would benefit from tidying and re-finishing. There is some heavy scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. Much of the original finish is worn and chipped away. There is some shrinkage cracking in places, including to the sides. There are some areas of wood and veneer loss, and one of the drawer fronts has a basic repair. There are some signs of old restoration and repair - some of the drawers runners have been replaced and there is a newer screw to one side. Some of the drawers are stiff and some of the runners need attention. There is some corrosion to the metal fixings. There is one escutcheon missing and no key is present. Most of the dividers are missing.
