Description

This attractive oak coffer dates from c.1780, but has has some alteration over the years. It has been altered so that the top is fixed and the front drops down, so it would make a nice log box. The coffer is constructed from solid oak with panelled sides and front and a planked top. There is attractive tramline decoration to the front side supports with carved lion heads at the top. Small wooden catches have been fitted at either side to hold the front up.

Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some quite heavy scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. As is mentioned above the coffer has had some significant alteration over the years - the top is fixed and the front drops down. The carving to the front panels is probably later than the coffer itself. The top is slightly warped and has some wood shrinkage cracking. It is stained with some marks. There are some signs of old woodworm damage, mainly to the sides and base - this is not active but has been retreated as a precaution.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
Overall - 58.5cm high, 122cm wide, 53.5cm deep (to maximums).
