Description

This attractive Victorian coal purdonium dates from c.1880. It is constructed from mostly solid mahogany. It has a hinged pull-out front, which opens to reveal the original removable tin liner. Above this is a small open section with a bevel-edged mirrored back with shaped sides and a shaped top. The piece retains its metal handles to the sides and front and metal and ceramic castors. The front has an attractive carved panel in the art nouveau style. With the liner removed it would make a nice magazine stand.

Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There is some scratching to the surfaces. It would originally have had a gallery or back rail on the top, but this is no longer present and the holes have been filled and polished. The tin liner is worn and holed with some surface corrosion, and we believe that the piece would originally have had a shovel which is now missing.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
Overall - 87cm high, 42.5cm wide (not including handles), 34.5cm deep.
