Description

This attractive antique bureau dates from c.1820. It is constructed from mostly solid oak with darker string inlays around the fall front and drawer fronts. The bureau consists of a fall-front desk section with a selection of pigeon holes, drawers and a central cupboard in the recess behind. The cupboard door has attractive inlaid decoration, is lockable, and retains a working key. Beneath the writing section are four long drawers that are graduated in size. The piece retains decorative brass handles that are later replacements. It is supported on shaped bracket feet.

Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in usuable condition, but does have some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There is a wood-shrinkage split to the left-hand side. The fall-front is a little warped (misshapen). In the recess behind the writing surface one of the small drawers is missing its handle and two of the pigeon holes are missing their aprons and the other four have some damage. The spacer between the two drawers on the right-hand side is missing. There is some staining to the work surface. The escutcheons of the long drawers have some loss. No keys are present except for the small cupboard. There are some signs of restoration - the handles have been replaced at some point and the beading aroud the bottom has also been replaced. There are some signs of old woodworm to the back panel - this is not active but has been retreated as a precaution.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
Overall - 107cm high, 97cm wide, 49cm deep (to maximums).
