Description

This attractive antique pedestal desk dates from around the 1870s. It is constructed from mahogany, some solid, some veneered over solid wood. The desk is of a good large size, and is around five foot wide. It has a red leather writing surface with gilt tooling. Beneath the top is a long drawer, flanked on either side by a smaller drawer. Each pedestal consists of three graduated drawers. The drawers retain turned wooden handles that are later replacements. All the drawers retain their locks, although most are missing their escutcheons and no key is present. The desk is supported on a plinth base. Please that it splits down into three pieces for ease of transportation.

Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There is some wood shrinkage splitting in places, mainly to the sides of the pedestals. As is mentioned above most of the drawers are missing their escutcheons, and no key is present. The desk has some signs of old repair and restoration.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
Overall - 71.5cm high, 152cm wide, 87cm deep (to maximums) 56.5cm height of kneehole.
