Description

This attractive bureau bookcase dates from c.1810-1820. It is constructed from mainly solid mahogany. The piece has an upper bookcase section with lovely astral-glazed doors, which open to reveal three adjustable wooden shelves. The right-hand door has a brass edging strip. Beneath this is the fall-front desk section with two banks of small graduated drawers in the recess at the back and a slim secret drawer at the bottom of the central compartment (which is released by a spring behind the bottom small drawer on the right-hand side). Beneath the desk are four long graduated drawers. The drawers retain their original locks, handles and escutcheons. The fall-front and right-hand bookcase door also retain their locks, and two keys are present, one of which works the bookcase lock and one of which works the fall-front and long drawer locks. The piece is supported on shaped bracket feet. It splits in two to aid with transportation.

Condition - Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some signs of restoration and repair. Two of the astral-glazed glass panels are cracked and there are some flaws in the glass. The fall-front is bowed, as are the small drawer fronts inside the desk section and the top long drawer front. There is some loss to the cock-beading in places and some areas of minor wood loss. There is some wood shrinkage cracking and veneer damage to the fall-front. There are some signs of old woodworm, primarily to the back panel - this is not active but has been retreated as a precaution.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
Overall - 218.5cm high, 98cm wide, 51cm deep (to maximums).
