Description

This superb antique coffer is of large proportions and is just over six foot long. It is constructed from solid oak with peg joints and blacksmith-made nails. We would estimate it to date from the early eighteenth century, but it may be earlier. The coffer has panelled sides, with five panels across the front and two across the sides, and a hinged three-plank lid. It retains its original decorative iron escutcheon and latch, but is missing its lock.

Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some significant scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some areas of wood loss in places. The coffer shows some signs of restoration and alteration - the pins that connect the lid to the base are modern blacksmith-made replacements. It has some old metal plates to the back right-hand corner on the outside. It is missing its lock. Two of the panels of the base are missing their inner joining strips. There is some signs of old woodworm damage, primarily to the base and the legs - this is not active, but has been retreated as a precaution.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
Overall - 80cm high, 185cm wide, 63cm deep (to maximums).
