Description

This unusual settle dates from approx. 1890. It is constructed from solid oak, although the seat has been veneered (over solid oak) to give a nice grain. It has lovely chip carving across the top back rail and to either side. The back rest has beautiful pokerwork decoration which we believe to be original to the piece. It does have some intertwined initials in the central pokerwork shield on the back panel - we believe these to be SF but it is difficult to be sure. The settle has shaped sides with a central lower stretcher. It is of nice proportions and is a handsome piece of antique arts & crafts design.

Condition Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, and the piece is overall a little faded and dusty. There is a loose piece of mouding at the top of the back rail on the left-hand side. The veneer on the seat is lifting in places and does have some loss.

The approx. measurements are as follows
Overall - 109.5cm high, 130cm wide, 50.5cm deep (to maximums) 44.5cm high to seat.
