Description

This superb multiple nodder group tableau featurs two couples (with four nodding heads in total) playing cards in an attractive C19th court scene. The bisque counter-weights are all marked 8587 (except for one of the gentlemen who has a makeshift replacement weight). The item is made from porcelain, is glazed, and superbly decorated with transfer-printing and hand-painting. We believe the piece to be of continental origin and to date from the late nineteenth century. All the nodding heads have flat metal pins through their necks and the heads nod up and down on this pivot.

Condition Overall in good condition with some wear consistent with age. There are some slight manufacturing flaws as might be expected and some rubbing and wear to the paintwork. The piece is overall grubby and would benefit from a careful clean. As is mentioned above one of the men has a makeshift replacement counter-weight, which appears to be made of putty, the other three counter-weights appear to have been glued back on and have had some work. One has a metal rod coming out of her neck, whereas the others are wooden, and the other gentleman has very little space between his neck and counterweight. Some of the heads nod more freely than others. Only one of the heads removes completely from the body. The metalwork has some surface corrosion.
