Description

This lovely gilt-framed over-mantle mirror is in the neo-classical style. We would estimate it to date from c.1810-1820, although it may be earlier. It does have a replacement mirror glass, which is stamped with May 1928 on the back. The mirror frame is wooden with a gesso and gilt finish. It has decorative neo-classical swags above the mirror glass and an inverted breakfront top with ball decoration.

Condition Overall this handsome piece is in usuable condition, but does have some wear consistent with age and use. The gesso has some significant cracking with some losses, including one of the balls around the top. The gilt paintwork has been touched up on places. There are some signs of old restoration and repair, including to the bottom edge at the front. As is mentioned above the mirror glass is a replacement from the 1920s, but the backing has started to degrade leaving some black marks on the mirror.

The approx. measurements are as follows
Frame - 60cm high, 96cm wide, 11cm deep (to maximums).
