Description

This superb open breakfront library bookcase dates from c.1830. It is constructed from mahogany, some solid, some veneered over a pine carcass. It has decorative ebony moldings and is supported on a plinth base. The top section splits from the bottom section. The top section has three adjustable wooden shelves in each part and the bottom section has two adjustable wooden shelves in each part.

Condition Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition, with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some areas of minor wood and veneer loss in places. The moulding is loose in places and there is an area of loss to the moulding on the right-hand side of the front near the bottom of the top section. There are screw holes in the back panels of both sections near the tops and brackets at either side at the top to screw it to the wall. The bottom of the base section is shaped at the back to allow the piece to fit over old skirting boards. As this is a hand-made piece please note that some of the shelves are a tighter fit than others and not all are interchangeable within the bookcase. Some of the shelves appear to be of later construction.

The approx. measurements are as follows
Overall - 260cm high, 157.5cm wide, 30.5cm deep (to maximums).
