Georgian Mahogany Astral-Glazed Bureau Bookcase
Description
This superb antique bureau bookcase dates from c.1820. It is constructed from mahogany, some solid, some veneered over solid wood. The piece consists of an upper shelved astral-glazed section with a decorative top cornice. The double astral-glazed doors open to reveal three wooden adjustable shelves. The lower section has a four graduated drawers with replacement (probably Victorian) brass handles, above which is a fall-front bureau section with an arrangement of drawers and pigeon holes behind. There is a central small cupboard in the recess which has a secret compartment at either side released by pushing a button at the top of the cupboard. The piece is supported on high bracket feet. All the locks are present (bookcase door, small cupboard door, bureau, and all four drawers) and four keys are present - one works the bookcase door, one works the small cupboard door (please note that this lock is very worn), one works the bureau, and one works all four drawer locks. The bookcase door lock is a replacement. Please note that the piece splits down into three for ease of transportation.
Condition Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition, with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some signs of old restoration, and there is some wood shrinkage cracking to the sides. There is some minor wood loss to the top cornice. There are a few paint scuffs. As is mentioned above the lock of the small cupboard door inside the bureau is very worn. All the locks are stiff with disuse.
The approx. measurements are as follows
Overall - 210.5cm high, 97.5cm wide, 53cm deep (to maximums).
