Description

This antique chest of drawers dates from c.1820 and is constructed from solid mahogany. It consists of three smaller drawers over three long drawers. The drawers have decorative brass handles, which we believe to be original. The chest retains all its original locks, except for one (for the top left-hand drawer) and one key is present which works the locks on the smaller drawers but not on the longer drawers. The chest is supported on shaped feet with a shaped lower apron that is decorative at the front.

Condition Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition, with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, and the chest is overall faded. As is mentioned above the top left-hand drawer is missing its lock, and no key is present for the lower drawers. The middle top drawer is missing its escutcheon. There are various areas where the cock-beading around the drawer fronts is missing, mainly to the bottom drawer. There is some wood shrinkage cracking to the side panels. The drawers sit slightly proud from the frame. There are some areas of wood loss, and there is an area of repair with wood loss to the top left-hand side edge. The top has some quite heavy staining and marking.
