Superb Pair of Substantial Inlaid Corner Cabinets

Photos

Description

This beautiful pair of substantial corner cabinets are Georgian in style, but are antique reproduction pieces dating from the early twentieth century. They were made by S. & H. Jewell of Holborn, London, and retain their maker's plaques on the inside of the lower cupboard doors. The cabinets were originally owned by the Montgomery Family of Kinross House and were sold at Christie's on 30 March 2011 (Sale 5436, Lot 165). We purchased them from Upton House, a country estate in Oxfordshire.

The cabinets are constructed from mahogany with lovely blind-fretwork decoration and satinwood inlay. They have glazed upper sections with astral-glazed doors and three adjustable glass shelves inside. There are lights inside the upper sections tucked into either side - we have no way of testing these as the wires terminate in junction boxes on top of the cabinets. They would need to be rewired by a professional electrician prior to use. Beneath the glazed sections are two-door cupboards with oval inlaid panels to the front and a single wooden shelf inside. The doors are brass bound and all retain their locks and escutcheons - three keys are present, one of which only works one of the bottom cupboard door locks (this has possibly been changed at some point) and two of which work all the other locks. The cabinets are supported on lovely shaped bracket feet. They are substantial pieces of superb quality and with good provenance. Please note that each cabinet splits in two for ease of transportation.

Condition Overall this handsome pair of cabinets are in good usuable condition, with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, and the cabinets are overall a little faded. Both the cabinets have some knocks and some heavy scratching to the top of the base section. One of the cabinets has a few areas of minor wood and veneer loss to the right-hand side, and one of the glass shelves in this cabinet has a couple of flakes at the back edge. This cabinet also has a a wood shrinkage crack in one of the back panels.

The approx. measurements are as follows
Overall - 209cm high, 102cm wide (across front), 56cm deep (front to back) (to maximums).
