Description

This lovely linen press dates from the first half of the twentieth century, but is older in style. It is constructed from solid wood, which we believe to be a mixture of ash and oak - although please note that we are not 100% sure of the wood types. The wood has been stained dark, and the piece has a very Gothic / Jacobean feel about it.The press is supported on a plinth base (that is a more modern replacement) and has a shaped top cornice. The left hand cupboard door opens to reveal a shelved section with five fixed wooden shelves that stretch into the central recessed section. The right-hand door opens to reveal a hanging section with a shelf above. The hanging section retains its pull-out metal hanging rail. The press retains its original wardrobe locks and handles with decorative back plates, although please note that no key is present. The doors are panelled with studwork decoration in the corners of the panels.

The piece can be split down into four for ease of transportation - the top cornice, the plinth base, the hanging section and the shelved section. Please be aware that the press is very heavy.

DateEarly 20th Century : 1920 Dimensions194.5cm high, 174.5cm wide, 51.5cm deep ConditionGood condition. There is some scuffing, knocking and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some areas of minor wood loss, and a piece of wood has been re-stuck on the top left back corner. There are some paint scuffs. There is some movement and shrinkage to the left-hand main door panel. There are some signs of repair - the plinth base is a modern replacement, and a metal plate has been fitted to the left-hand door frame to help the lock catch. The wardrobe lock on the right-hand door needs attention as it does not currently latch. There are some signs of old woodworm - this is not active but has been retreated as a precaution. The inside is a little grubby and would benefit from being cleaned.
