Description
Ca.1820 Samuel Raven papier mache snuff box painted with the portrait of a lady in a red dress and wearing a hat.Inside of the lid is inscribed ‘S. Raven pinxt. Patronized by HRH The Duke of Sussex & Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg’. Some of the red lettering is worn but the same inscription can be found on other examples of Raven’s boxes which makes it easy to fill in the blanks.
Condition wise, the painted surface is slightly rough to the touch, the paint shrinkage over the years causing a dry craquelure effect. Rubbing, marks and scratches. The rims show signs of wear but no evidence of restoration.
Measures 10 cm diameter and weighs 62 grams.
