Description

A substantial and finely crafted oak refectory dining table in the 17th-century revival manner, the rectangular plank top of generous proportions with a well-figured surface showing attractive medullary ray and grain variation, bordered by a slightly moulded edge. The frieze is richly ornamented with continuous carved foliate and lunette motifs, demonstrating strong Jacobean influence and providing a sense of depth and rhythm to the overall design.
The table is raised on a pair of robust baluster and bulb-turned supports, each extensively carved with stylised acanthus and leaf decoration, terminating in substantial trestle bases with scroll-carved feet. These are united by a central stretcher, enhancing both stability and visual balance. The quality of carving throughout is notable, with crisp definition and a consistent, well-patinated finish.
Practical as well as decorative, the table incorporates pull-out extension leaves to either end, allowing it to accommodate additional diners while maintaining proportional integrity.
