Description

An elegant early twentieth century carved walnut canapé or three-seat settee, executed in the Louis XV taste and distinguished by its richly modeled rococo framework and extensive cane work. The serpentine crest rail rises in a series of four shaped arches, centered by a finely carved shell cartouche flanked by scrolling acanthus and foliate ornament. Below, the back is divided into five panels, each inset with tightly woven cane, framed by molded and carved stiles. Two shaped walnut splats with beautifully figured burr veneer reserves provide visual contrast against the open cane ground, lending warmth and depth to the overall composition.
The outscrolled arms terminate in graceful volutes and are fully caned at the sides, an unusual and refined detail that enhances both lightness and craftsmanship. The arm supports flow seamlessly into a serpentine seat rail, lavishly carved with rocailles, C-scrolls, stylized foliage, and shell motifs. The carving is crisp and well-articulated throughout, with particular attention to the knees, which display bold acanthus carving above cabriole legs that taper elegantly to pad feet. The rear legs follow the line of the frame with subtle curvature, maintaining the fluidity characteristic of the Louis XV idiom.

The seat is fitted with a pair of loose, generously proportioned cushions upholstered in a soft blue fabric, providing a pleasing tonal counterpoint to the warm honey-brown patina of the walnut.
