Description

A well-crafted Regency-style games table of rectangular form, executed in richly figured rosewood with finely contrasted boxwood and satinwood inlay. The hinged top opens to reveal a reversible games surface, incorporating a centrally inlaid chessboard framed by delicate stringing and crossbanding, with a secondary interior surface arranged for backgammon, the alternating veneers laid in radiating chevron panels.
The table is raised on four elegant reeded, swept and intersecting legs, joined by a finely turned X-form stretcher, terminating in brass caps and castors. The frieze is fitted with two functional drawers, flanking a central faux drawer, all fitted with cast brass swan-neck handles with decorative backplates. Oval inlaid reserves enrich the corners of the apron, enhancing the classical symmetry of the design.
The rosewood veneers are attractively figured and well matched throughout, retaining a warm, polished patina. The piece displays good quality cabinetmaking with crisp detailing and balanced proportions, offering both decorative appeal and practical versatility.
