After finishing school in Örebro, Callmander went to Stockholm where he studied with Fredrik Liljeblad 1860-1861, he continued his studies at the Art Academy 1863-1864 with the help of a scholarship from King Charles XV and Queen Dowager Josefina, he studied in Antwerp, Düsseldorf and Paris in 1862–1865 and in Antwerp and Munich in 1873–1877. He settled in Gothenburg in 1877, where he became one of the leaders in the city's art scene. Callmander co-founded the Society “Gnistan” in 1878 and in the years 1878–1882 he was a teacher of drawing at Gothenburg's Musei Ritskola, the embryo of today's Valand Academy of Art. He taught ornamental painting and drawing at the Slöjdföreningens school and was employed as an illustrator for a number of contemporary newspapers under the signature Callmus. Callmander had a significant activity in stained glass, first in collaboration with a local glass master, but from 1888 with the company Svenska glasmåleriaktiebolaget , which also produced stained glass after models by other artists. Callmander was a pioneering figure in this field. A problem with works from Callander's company is that they partly used colors that had faded. Public works were carried out in Uppsala Cathedral , Örgryte new church, Oscar Fredrik's church in Gothenburg and several churches including Karlstad , Umeå, Gränna, Hjo, Falköping, Falkenberg, Ljungby and Asmundtorp. He is represented in the National Museum and Gothenburg Art Museum, Västergötland Museum, Helsingborg Museum, Gothenburg City Museum and with a sketchbook with 10 drawings in Uppsala University Library.
