Description

An Indian carved padauk wood table.

This most elaborate and grand Indian Raj period centre or breakfast table is larger than most other examples. It is made from dense heavy paduka wood which is native to India.

The table stands on solid brass castors which support the lower platform base which is of a cross form with an intricate fruit and vine carved frieze. Rising from the platform are four large beautifully carved tigers which connect to four carved and fretted panels with a matching fruit and vine design.

The panels support a substantial carved central circular column which rises to the rectangular platform to which the hinged top is connected and can be hinged and raised by releasing the ornate brass catch for display or storage.

The magnificent table top is circular but has a shaped serpentine profile edge with a carved and pierced frieze which matches the decoration to the base.

The top is made from two substantial solid pieces of book matched padauk wood and has a lovely colour and patination.

This rare and highly decorative table is a statement piece and one of the best of its type.
