Description

A 19th C antique Grand Tour walking stick with an equestrian racehorse carved handle.

This superb antique carved solid olive wood walking stick is made from one single piece of wood.

It is a Grand Tour item made on the Greek island of Corfu from the town of Kepkypa where such pieces were handmade and sold to wealthy 19th century Grand Tour travellers.

This very fine hand carved walking stick has a fabulous racehorse head handle wearing a traditional bridle and saddle with foot stirrups. At the back of the handle between the hanging stirrups is a carved face, beautifully detailed of a Greek god. Below, set within a raised tablet is a wonderfully carved signature from the town of its origin, Kepkypa.

The walking stick is very high quality and in beautiful original condition. It is strong and remarkably weight bearing considering its slender proportions. It would be a great addition to a collection or very usable as a walking stick.

Greek, circa 1870

Height 33cm x width 10cm x depth 3cm
