Description

This most impressive large scale Black Forest limewood figure is beautifully carved and depicts the full standing figure of a portly monk dressed in a simple habit cheerfully enjoying a large goblet of wine or maybe several judging by his expression. The carving is high quality with good detail and is finished by hand with natural chisel and gouge cuts which have not been sanded. This is a sign of the great skill of the carver and results in a very pleasing and tactile finish which has a very rich patination and a waxed high lustre. This large scale carving is in very good original condition with no repairs or restoration.
Circa 1900.
Height 54cm x width 22cm x depth 18cm
