Description

This is an unusual and quite rare silk piled rug from East Turkestan, probably Khotan. It features quite a vibrant colour palette and very interesting design with a mythical deity beneath the Mihrab, attended by a caparisoned elephant. It is framed by deep coral borders of meandering vines and rosettes. The design of the weaving is such that the rug has both raised piled areas and flatweave areas so giving it a plush 3 dimensional quality. The flatweave areas can be seen in the dark gold shade in the photos. The rug dates from around 1920 and is in excellent condition throughout. It measures 165 cms by 114 cms.
