Description

This is a wonderful woollen hand knotted quality Donegal carpet from West Ireland which dates from the late 19th /early 20th century. Donegal carpet production was set up by Alexander Morton in the 1890s. Local wool and dyes were used and initially the carpets produced were based on oriental designs, especially from Ushak in Anatolia. These carpets were exhibited at Liberty in London.
This carpet is of Ushak design and has the most luxurious soft woollen feel to it and is a fabulous warm coral in colour. The coral red field has columns of stylised flowerheads and is enclosed by deep borders with stylised flowers in shades of coral, mid blue and soft gold. There is wear to one end of the carpet (see photos) and some fading towards one end. However the carpet is in fine condition and has years of service left. The quality of the weave can be seen in photo 7. This is a great room size measuring 412 cms by 275 cms and would be a great attribute to a larger reception room.
