Description

This is a superb quality mahogany and satinwood banded Longcase clock by T. Gaskell of Knutsford. The elegant clock has a wonderful colour and rich patina to the case which has many features that elevate it from the norm. The pediment has three fine finials, two raised on satinwood square columns, the central finial being on a carved and pierced solid mahogany plinth. This above a fine hand painted frieze decorated with urns and scrolls and hand carved roses to the swan neck pediment. The arched glazed door is flanked to either side by four finely turned cluster columns, a rare feature in a Longcase and a true sign of the quality. This feature is echoed in the case with further cluster columns flanking the central door which has an attractive triple arched waist door. The door has its original working lock and key and decorative carved bone detail, satinwood line inlay and it’s original hinges and decorative escutcheon. The case is raised on elegant ogee bracket feet to the base which is further inland and features canted corners and reeded details. The recently serviced two train movement runs for eight days keeping good time, striking on a bell on the hour every hour. It has an anchor escapement, painted roman dial with foliate spandrels and a moon phase to the arch which displays a rural scene and a shipwreck. The movement has subsidiary seconds and date dials.
Thomas Gaskell worked in Knutsford Cheshire making high quality clocks in the late 1700s with examples being recorded with dates from 1784 to 1795.
The clock is an imposing piece measuring 246 cms high by 55 cms wide by 25 cms deep.
