Description

This is a good pair of Chinese tomb guardian, buddhist lions dating from the early 20th century in the Sancai or (three colour)glaze. The Sancai triple glaze originated in the Tang period circa 618-907 and was first found on tomb figures appearing around 700. The lions are superbly modelled in hard paste porcelain and have flower capped columns to the back for holding joss sticks and incense burning. The pair are modelled open mouthed with typical tongue out pose. The right hand dog has a nice feature in that its paw rests upon a stake which descends through a pierced brocade ball that rotates independently. The pair are in excellent condition with no damage or restoration.

The lions measure 17.5 cms in height.
