Description

This is a truly beautiful antique paisley shawl which dates from around 1870. The shawl is finely woven in wool and has a beautifully subtle colour palette and design. The shawl edging with its mihrab border and tassels, shows off the colours of the wools used, the bright blue and golden yellow being particularly vibrant.
This shawl was a 'Medaille D'Honneur' winner at the Paris Exposition where it was shown, the gilt stamp suggests the year 1867. It is a large size 'Piano Shawl' - they were often used to cover grand pianos. Its measurements are 340 cms by 155 cms and apart from one or two very minor pinholes it is in excellent condition with no wear or repairs. A rare and altogether beautiful example.
