Description

This is a wonderful woollen hand knotted quality Donegal carpet from West Ireland which dates from the late 19th /early 20th century. Donegal carpet production was set up by Alexander Morton in the 1890s. Local wool and dyes were used and initially the carpets produced were based on oriental designs, especially from Ushak in Anatolia. These carpets were exhibited at Liberty in London.
This carpet is of Ushak design and has the most luxurious soft woollen feel to it and it has a beautiful softly muted colour palette typical of arts and crafts designs, with a cream field of vines around a central flowerhead medallion, framed by spandrels and meanders vine borders. The carpet is in really good overall condition with with just slight wear to the fringe at one end.
This is a really good room size measuring 369 cms by 293 cms.
