Description

A grand pair of Regency era Old Sheffield Plate (OSP) candelabra each base marked with a cross over globe for Blagden, Hodgson & Co. of Nursery Street, Sheffield and dates to 1821.

Old Sheffield Plate is highly sought-after and collectable not to be confused with later EPNS or Electro-Plated Nickel Silver. Old Sheffield Plate was invented by Thomas Boulsover, of Sheffield's Cutlers Company, in 1743. The technique Boulsover developed was to sandwich an ingot of copper between two plates of silver, tightly bind it with wire, heat it in a furnace and then mill it out in to sheet, from which objects could be made.

This large impressive pair are beautifully decorated with elements of hand-chasing. They remain in excellent condition with high points of the copper showing through which is just how they should be and should be left so.

When dismantled you are able to create a pair of candlesticks which can be used in a different setting.

They span 20" across x 6" deep (base) x 22 1/2" tall.
