Description

A fine oil on artists board by Sidney Valentine Gardner titled Summer blossoms. The scene depicts a figure walking by a stream carrying blossoms she has collected from the trees and bushes around. The painting is beautifully captured with a bold and clever use of colour and brushwork that depicts the light and shade of summer beautifully. The work is in excellent condition, having been professionally cleaned. It is signed to the lower left ‘Sid Gardner’ and dated 1896, the painting is also titled and inscribed on the reverse. Sidney Valentine Gardner 1869-1957 was born and is chiefly associated with Nottingham, an active exhibitor in the city he was elected to the Nottingham Society of Artists in 1908. He was one of a group of artists from the city that had some association with the Staithes group in Yorkshire and Gardner was elected as a member of the Staithes Art Club in 1903. The work of Gardner does show the influence of the Staithes group in his use of light and colour as can be seen in this piece. He exhibited widely and prolifically including 73 works in Nottingham as well as at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. This work retains the original silvered frame which is in good untouched condition with the original silvering, it does have some wear in places. The whole has a great look and is a fine example of this desirable artist’s work.
