Description

An exceptional early 19th century item of treenware, built to wrap all your Christmas gifts!
Fashioned as a low classical column on an octagonal base, it is larger than most antique string boxes and finely turned. The quality of the turning is partly due to the wood used, a hardwood that may be a type of mahogany or similar dense tropical wood.
The main body of the string box is turned and also veneered in a more decorative cut of wood, and retains its original surface. It is screwed to the base.
The top locates on the column with wooden lugs which have been beautifully repaired. In superb condition, heavy and stable. Circa 1820
Height: 24cm
Base: 20cm
