Description

Rare 17th Century James I Church Warden's Carved Oak Armchair.

Reputedly originally from Auckland Castle, the oral description as below.

Originally this armchair was within Auckland Castle, when the castle was demolished in 1646 the chair was removed and given to Escomb Saxon Church, Bishop Auckland. The chair remaining at Escomb until the parish church was outgrown and St. John's Church was built in 1866 where the chair was then moved. Henry Kilburn was the first Church warden of St. John's church and the chair was given to his family in recognition.
The engraved silver plaque to the front of chair records this in memory.

Original condition throughout with fine colour and patina.

Boldly carved with great form and presence.
A wonderful early English armchair with rare provenance.
Payment accepted by direct bank transfer or cheque.
