Description

We have for sale a rather stunning late Victorian to Edwardian Joseph Sankey and Sons arts and crafts copper and steel chamberstick.

This unusual copper and steel chamberstick consists of a lovely leaf shaped base, the stalk of which extends in the form of a coiled steel handle which loops towards the centre creating a coiled steel sconce. The base of the chamberstick carries the Sankeys Neptune mark introduced in about 1890 for use on pieces of Sankeys "Neptune Art Ware" range destined for select retailers who did not wish them marked with the more commonly used Sankeys JS&S trademark. Sankeys "Neptune Art Ware" range, incorporated arts and crafts and art nouveau themes no doubt taking advantage of the growing fashions in arts and crafts and art nouveau designs. The manufacture of pieces in this range including trays, bread baskets candle stick and waiters apparently continued up to 1910 and beyond.

The chamberstick is 8.25 inches (21cm) long, 5.5 inches (14cm) wide with a 3.25 inch (8.3cm) high looped steel handle. The chamberstick is in an excellent condition other than the light surface wear one would expect a well loved piece of decorative functional copperware of this age.
