Description

Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil artwork on canvas depicting a mythological subject taken from Virgil's Aeneid, Aeneas with his father Anchises and his son Ascanius flee from burning Troy. Our painting represents the daring escape of Prince Aeneas with his old father on his shoulders and his son Ascanius following them. Anchises carries with him the statuette of the penates, tutelary spirits of the family dear to the ancients. In the background, however, we find the city in flames that fell into the trap of the Horse devised by Ulysses. A painting of notable pictorial quality, found in particular in the details of the Trojan hero's armor and in the use of the chiaroscuro technique in a highly fascinating nocturne. 20th century frame in carved, lacquered and gilded wood, with some signs of aging. Painting that has undergone restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and restoration of color in some places (see photo). Overall in good state of conservation. Sight size H 70 x W 94 cm.
