Description

An excellent 18th century London longcase clock by Weeks Cannon of Peckham.

The 5 pillar 8 day duration movement has an anchor escapement and strikes the hours on a bell. The full brass dial has a separate silvered brass chapter ring engraved with the makers name and place of work. To the centre is a brass matted centre with seconds, date aperture and blued steel hands of typical London design. All surrounded with brass spandrels and to the arch, a strike/silent dial.

The typically London case from this late 18th century period is of a high quality and is veneered with some exceptional flame mahogany veneer. The case has a long trunk door and is flanked by reeded and brass inlaid quarter pillars. The base has a raised shaped panel and a typical double shaped plinth. Both the trunk door and base panel have superb flame veneers of the highest quality. The hood with separate brass capped and brass inlaid angle pillars below a pagoda top fitted with an unusual brass sound fret. The pagoda finished with two brass finials.

Note: There is a William Cannon of London listed as working during this period. Perhaps the name ‘Weeks’ is a nickname. Or it could be the name of the original owner. Although a reasonably small village/town, Peckham was a thriving and wealthy area during the latter part of the 18th century.

Height: 96 inches

This clock is a recent arrival and although currently in working order the movement will be fully serviced and overhauled before delivery. It will then be guaranteed for 3 years.
