Description

An extremely rare 10" Georgian satinwood wheel barometer.

The 10" silvered brass dial is concealed within a high quality brass concave glazed bezel and is calibrated from 28" to 31" with typical weather indications and star engraving to the centre. Also with a finely made blued indicator hand and a brass set hand which is controlled via the bone knob below the main dial. The beautifully engraved and silvered brass thermometer scale is calibrated from 10º to 110º Fahrenheit and mounted in a removable satinwood box with inlaid decoration. Also with a working hygrometer above with a rare adjustable pointer. The silvered brass bubble level features the makers name and place of work Lione Somalvico & Co, 125 Holborn Hill, London.

The exceptional and elegant satinwood veneered case is inlaid to the edge with boxwood, ebony, tulip wood and shell inlays to the centre. The top of the barometer has the unusual and rare feature of an ebonised pagoda shaped pediment and two finial stands either side. All surmounted with three brass finials. Its possible that this feature is in reference to the death of Admiral Lord Nelson who died in 1805.

A superb and rare example.

Note Both Lione and Somalvico were prolific Instrument makers in there own right but were obviously in partnership for a short time during the first part of the 19th century. They made only the finest barometers, using high quality materials and workmanship. This barometer is of particular interest due to its unusual pediment, the satinwood veneered cabinet work and the adjustable hygrometer. Features that were only used, on the very finest barometers of the day.
