Description

A brass bound teak campaign chest with secretaire drawer. As you would expect, the front of the middle drawer of the top row is hinged to fold down and form the writing surface, once the two sprung brass buttons to the inside of the drawer are released. It is also fitted with a Bramah, London lock which is an indication of the overall quality. The secretaire has a dark blue leather skiver with a gilt tooled border and central cartouche. The interior has a long drawer with two short drawers above, flanked by a pigeon hole. The long drawer has dividers to the right to take a single inkwell with a lidded, longer compartment behind. The secretaire drawers are veneered in satin wood and the dust boards between the drawers are edged in a mahogany reeded moulding. The chest retains its original board which is used to prevent these drawers falling out during transport. Although most secretaire chests had these boards the majority have been lost with time. This is a good, standard sized campaign chest with the type of flush brass handles that you would expect of this date. It breaks into two parts and the legs are removable on wooden threads. Circa 1875.
