Description

Victorian brass cased carriage clock standing on a raised plinth with pad feet. Thick bevelled glass to all panels with silvered, reeded Corinthian columns and dentil moulding. Ornate carrying handle with silvered centre.

Enamel dial signed ‘H.Pratt, Brighton’ with Roman numerals and original ‘moonpoise’ hands.

Eight day French movement of fine quality numbered 992, striking the hours and halves on a coiled gong with push repeat and large silvered lever escapement. C.1880

‘Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’ by Brian Loomes lists Henry Pratt as having been born in 1838 and working in Brighton from 1862 to 1891. He is also listed as having invented a compensated pendulum and as being an amateur astrologer!
