Description

Fine flame mahogany case with ormolu mounts and ormolu caryatids standing on bracket feet. Silvered dial with subsidiary dial for strike/silent, Roman numerals, date aperture above the VI and signed Thomas Pace, London. Heavy brass side carrying handles with silk lined starburst frets. The glazed rear door gives way to a beautifully engraved back plate and similarly engraved suspension cover.

Eight day, five pillar, double fuse movement of fine quality with verge escapement and pull repeat on a centrally mounted bell. C.1780

‘Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the world’ by Brian Loomes lists Thomas Pace as working in London from around 1780-1824, he was an eminent clockmaker who worked from 128 Whitechapel. He is also recorded in the Clockmakers and watchmakers apprentices records as having taken one Jeremiah Sewell on as an apprentice in 1786 for seven years for the sum of £10.Thomas Pace is listed here as both a clock and watchmaker in St. Mary’s, Whitechapel. Baillie lists Thomas Pace as an eminent maker of Bracket and Longcase clocks
