Description

A fabulous and rare 19th century reverse glass painting after Steuben’s famous picture of Napoleon’s return from the island of Elba, in a gilt wood frame.

– Depicts Napoleon’s return from Elba in 1815, when he stood in front of the Royalist force with his own soldiers and reputedly said that if they were going to kill their emperor, they should do it now.
– The soldiers disobeyed an order to fire and this picture shows them celebrating his return, with two supplicant soldiers at this feet.
– There are subtle differences between this and the original painting by Charles de Steuben for instance, the two supplicant soldiers are here in red uniforms.
– Wooden back holds the glass into the frame.
– The title printed beneath the picture is in English.

A wonderful decorative piece for any wall with a lovely frame, this will particularly appeal to collectors of Napoleonic items or those with an interest in French history.

In good condition. The frame has some minor chips and cracks, but the wear is consistent with age and use.
